In a bid to bolster the local fishing industry and preserve the ecological balance of freshwater fish in Laguna de Bay, the Taguig City Agriculture Office and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-National Capital Region (BFAR-NCR) joined hands in releasing 125,000 tilapia fingerlings into the famed lake. This initiative was part of Taguig's grand celebration of its 437th Founding Anniversary.
The release of the fingerlings is a recurring annual effort aimed at supporting the livelihood of local fisherfolk who heavily rely on the bounties of Laguna de Bay for their sustenance.
Moreover, it serves as a crucial step in replenishing inland bodies of water, safeguarding the habitat of aquatic life, and maintaining the delicate balance of the lake's ecosystem.
Mayor Lani Cayetano underscored the historical significance of agriculture and fishing to Taguig City, expressing her unwavering commitment to supporting the fishing industry. She emphasized her dedication to implementing programs that would benefit the city's fisherfolk, acknowledging their vital role in Taguig's heritage and economy.
"Sa ika-437th Founding Anniversary ng Taguig, pinapahalagahan po natin ang ating kasaysayan - at sa kasaysayan ng Taguig, ang pagsasaka at pangisdaan ang pangunahing ikinabubuhay po ng ating mga kababayan," Mayor Lani stated, reaffirming her pledge to prioritize the welfare of Taguig's fishermen.
The event saw the participation of key figures such as Chairman for Agriculture and Fisheries Councilor Lamberto Mañosca, Taguig City Agriculture Office head Emelita Solis, representatives from BFAR-NCR and Fisheries and Aquatic Resource Management Council (FARMC), as well as representatives from Taguig's fisherfolk groups hailing from coastal barangays.
The annual release of tilapia fingerlings into Laguna de Bay not only symbolizes Taguig's commitment to environmental stewardship but also underscores its dedication to uplifting the lives of its residents dependent on fishing for their livelihoods.
