Each year, on April 25th, Taguig City comes alive with celebrations as it honors its storied past and vibrant culture on Taguig Foundation Day.

Taguig Foundation Day

Dating back to April 25, 1587, when Taguig was officially established as a separate "pueblo" (town), this annual occasion holds profound significance in the hearts of Taguigeños and serves as a testament to the city's enduring legacy.

Rooted in Pre-Colonial History

Taguig's history traces back to pre-colonial times when it was a thriving Tagalog settlement, enriched by the presence of Moro and Chinese communities.

Recent archaeological excavations have unearthed artifacts such as cups, plates, and utensils bearing Chinese characters, indicating early trade and cultural exchanges. The practice of duck culture and the production of cotton cloth and "sawali" from bamboo strips were integral parts of Taguig's pre-colonial economy and way of life.

Spanish Influence and Resistance

With the arrival of the Spaniards and the subsequent subjugation of mainland Luzon, Taguig became one of the earliest territories to be Christianized.

Under Spanish rule, Taguig flourished as an encomienda, with Captain Cervantes y Vergara overseeing its administration. However, Taguig's history also bears witness to acts of resistance against colonial oppression.

From the Tondo Conspiracy of 1587 to the participation of Taguigeños in the Katipunan uprising, the people of Taguig demonstrated courage and defiance against foreign rule.

Notable Figures and Landmarks

Taguig's historical significance is further underscored by notable figures and landmarks that have shaped its identity. Santiago Bonifacio, father of revolutionary Andres Bonifacio, hailed from Ligid Tipas, a testament to the city's role in the struggle for independence.

Barrio Tipas, particularly the Napindan Lighthouse, served as a strategic meeting point for revolutionary forces during the Katipunan era. Over the centuries, Taguig has preserved its heritage through landmarks such as old churches and cultural traditions passed down through generations.

Modern Development and Urbanization

In the 21st century, Taguig has undergone remarkable transformations, evolving into a dynamic metropolis while retaining its cultural heritage.

The development of former military reservations in the Fort Bonifacio area has led to the emergence of Bonifacio Global City (BGC), a thriving business and lifestyle hub.

Other mixed-use developments such as Acacia Estate and Arca South reflect Taguig's commitment to sustainable urbanization and community-centric growth.

Embracing the "Probinsyudad" Identity

In 2011, Mayor Lani Cayetano coined the term "Probinsyudad" to describe Taguig's unique identity—a fusion of provincial charm and urban sophistication.

With its lakeshores, agricultural communities, and spirit of cooperation, Taguig embodies the essence of a modern city with a touch of rural warmth. The trademarking of the term "Probinsyudad" in 2024 further solidified Taguig's distinct character and sense of pride.
