The country’s flagship infrastructure project, the Metro Manila Subway Project (MMSP), has cleared another significant hurdle. The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has awarded a crucial contract package that will facilitate the construction of a segment leading to Taguig City, marking the first new contract award for the project since 2022.

The DOTr issued the Notice of Award for Contract Package (CP) 105 to the joint venture between D.M. Consunji Inc. (DMCI) and Nishimatsu Construction Co. Ltd. The award, dated October 29, mandates the joint venture to commence work after furnishing the required performance security within 28 days.

The contract price for CP 105 is set at P21.73 billion (approximately $52.17 million or 3.96 billion Japanese yen), exclusive of the 12 percent value-added tax. The award was officially addressed to Keiji Matsushita, who represents the joint venture.

Taguig Segment Details and Timeline

CP 105 specifically covers the subway infrastructure within Taguig City. This segment includes:

  • A 0.66-kilometer tunnel.

  • A 242.2-meter station in Kalayaan.

  • A 436.05-meter station in Bonifacio Global City (BGC).

According to a report filed by DMCI with its investors, the completion of CP 105 is estimated to take at least 67 months, or approximately six years and five months.

Second Win for DMCI-Nishimatsu Duo

This latest award marks the second MMSP contract secured by the partnership of DMCI and Nishimatsu. The joint venture previously won CP 102 in 2022, which covers the East Avenue and Quezon Avenue segment of the subway line.

Project Delays and Remaining Contracts

The long delay in awarding CP 105—the first since 2022—had previously contributed to a major revision of the MMSP timeline. The project's targeted completion was pushed back by at least three years.

The DOTr is now working to expedite the remaining packages to keep the project on its revised schedule. The agency still needs to issue two more Contract Packages:

  • CP 108: The Lawton to Senate segment.

  • CP 109: The airport line segment.

The DOTr aims to award all remaining contracts within the year to adhere to the new deadline of completing the entire MMSP by 2032.

The MMSP, the nation’s first underground rail system, will span 33 kilometers with 17 stations, connecting Valenzuela City and the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA). Once operational, the subway is projected to drastically reduce the end-to-end travel time to only 35 minutes, offering significant relief to Metro Manila commuters. The project was originally slated for partial operations by 2028 but faced setbacks primarily due to right-of-way issues in various sections.
