In a major push to strengthen local food security, the Taguig City Government officially launched its “RICE Up, Taguig!” initiative on Wednesday, May 6, targeting around 50,000 vulnerable households across the city.
The program—implemented under the national government’s “Sa Bagong Pilipinas, Bawat Bayan Makikinabang” framework and the Bigay Bigas para sa Masa initiative—aims to provide essential food support to city volunteers, persons with disabilities (PWDs), solo parents, farmers, fisherfolk, and other priority sectors.
Direct Support for Vulnerable Families
Under the program, qualified beneficiaries will receive 10 kilograms of high-quality rice per distribution cycle, spanning a total of four scheduled tranches. City officials noted that the rice provided meets the same quality standards as the staple distributed during Taguig's annual Pamaskong Handog program.
The initial distribution kickoff at the Hagonoy Sports Complex provided immediate assistance to 2,400 beneficiaries in two separate batches.
Mayor Lani Cayetano led the ceremonial turnover alongside Congressman Ricardo “Ading” Cruz Jr., Vice Mayor Arvin Ian Alit, and members of the City Council.
“Local government units in Metro Manila were authorized to identify the sectors and individuals most qualified to receive assistance under this rice subsidy program,” Mayor Cayetano explained during her address, encouraging residents to receive the aid with gratitude and shared purpose.
Timetable and Community Impact
The city government will continue executing the distribution in phased waves. Following the launch, teams aim to complete allocations for 9,652 city volunteers through May 8 before expanding distributions to remaining target sectors.
For local workers and parents, the subsidy offers immediate relief against daily household expenses:
Rachiel Nacor, a city street sweeper and mother of five, highlighted the practical impact on her home:
“Napakalaking bagay po nito para sa amin. Tulad ko, lima po yung anak ko. Sa isang araw, nakakadalawang kilo po kami ng bigas. So bali limang araw ang maiiraraos nito sa pangkain namin.” (This is a huge help for us. I have five children, and we consume about two kilos of rice a day. This will cover five days' worth of meals for my family.)
Michel Marquez, a solo parent, also voiced appreciation for the joint LGU and national effort:
“Malaking tulong ito sa pamilya ko. Marami-maraming salamat sa ating Pangulo at kay Mayor Lani Cayetano sa ganitong tulong sa pamilyang Taguigeño.”
