About St. Andrew Kim Taegon

St. Andrew Kim Taegon (August 21, 1821 – September 16, 1846) was the first Korean Catholic priest and is the patron saint of Korean clergy. He played a crucial role in the growth of Catholicism in Korea despite the severe religious persecution during the Joseon Dynasty.

Born into a family of Christian converts, his father and other relatives were martyred for their faith. At age 15, Andrew Kim was baptized and later studied in Macau and Bulacan, Philippines. In 1844, he was ordained as a priest in Shanghai and returned to Korea to continue his mission. At just 25 years old, he was captured, tortured, and executed for his faith.

His last words reflected his unwavering faith: "This is my last hour of life; listen to me attentively: if I have held communication with foreigners, it has been for my religion and my God. It is for Him that I die. My immortal life is on the point of beginning."

He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1984, alongside 102 other Korean martyrs.
